Committees have been established and are now considering organizing a petition campaign to remove certain city directors and/or the mayor. A petition drive to remove a director requires 600 to 800 signatures from voters within the director's district and to remove the Mayor requires around 3,434 signatures of voters from anywhere in the city.
Another petition drive being considered is an initiative to remove the downtown bottleneck (1,472 signatures). Others discussed include ending the taxpayer funded vacations to Hanamaki Japan, to start funding the fire department rather than loaning them money ($890,000 has been loaned in the last year) to create a future crisis, to cease charging outrageous fees to fire and police departments which takes funds from the voter approved sales tax for fire and police operations, etc, etc. . .
Following successful petition drives, the voters are provided an opportunity to vote on the issues. That is the democratic process and the American way. Obviously, we would prefer that our leaders conduct themselves appropriately and perform as true representatives of their constituents. However, whenever leaders become self-serving, rude, and arrogant, they must either resign or recognize that the power of good government lies in the hands of the citizens. Occasionally the citizens must demonstrate this by direct action of the voters. Let us have your thoughts and recommendations for future projects. Better yet, come join us.
